Album Review: Nova Twins – ‘Who Are The Girls?’

Nova Twins are set to release their debut album ‘Who Are the Girls?’ on 28th February 2020! This London based rock duo are fast becoming trailblazers in their own right, and are using their platform to champion inclusivity and diversity. Nova Twins have dedicated this album to all the people who are beautifully diverse and creating their own lanes by acting as a celebration of those who feel like they don’t fit in.

The album kicks off with ‘Vortex’, a track laced with a myriad of bass and guitar pedals which give it a slightly more mainstream sound than their usual rock vibe. There’s an edgy, almost sensual tone to the introduction which progresses in to an upbeat frensy that really sets the pace for the rest of the album!

‘Devils Face’ exceeds this pace with a chaotic intro and intense vocals, it is the kind of track that would be an offence to miss off a setlist! The searing guitar and attacking vocals give it a more distorted sound than ‘Vortex’, settling it in a heavier rock category.

Both of these tracks were released prior to the album as singles and featured on radio stations such as BBC Radio 1, Kerrang! Radio, and Radio X. Nova Twins were also named as Annie Mac’s ‘New Name’, so these are definitely ones to keep your eye on…

‘Play Fair’ is a relentlessly powerful track that begins by leading you in to a bit of a false sense of security. The seemingly simple drum beat in the introduction soon erupts in to a roaring, attention grabbing beat that persists throughout the track. The drawn out breaths before each chorus adds to the anticipation and makes for an adrenaline sparking track.

To say that this album includes a plethora of genres would be an understatement! ‘Taxi’ has a futuristic, sci-fi feel with its mashed up vocals and disorientating intro. It puts a modern twist on rock that most artists stray from, this was a leap of faith, but one that worked in their favour!

This is a frequent trend within the album and is one that can be seen on rave banger ‘Undertaker’, with its electric intro and dynamic chords.

Continuing this diversity is ‘Ivory Tower’, an ethereal track with mystical vocals which brings a surprising change of tone to ‘Who Are The Girls?’ the unembellished, delicate music perfectly balances out the eerie vocals and is almost a bit unsettling? This song definitely gives you the chills.

‘Who Are The Girls?’ is an exciting taste in to the future that is the Nova Twins but also an acts as an insight in to the endless possibilities within rock! This album was the ideal way of impressing old fans while intriguing new ones. With a UK/European headline tour on the horizon, here is your opportunity to check them out!
