EP Review: Veridian – NoVella

Rock band Veridian are set to release their EP: ‘NoVella’ on 17th January 2020, a follow up to their debut EP ‘40826D’. So far Veridian have received coverage from BBC, Kerrang!, BT TV, Triple J, Idobi, and Alt Press. This EP is a fantastic demonstration of what they’re capable of as a band and they are definitely ones to watch in 2020!

‘Halo’ was released as a single prior to the EP and is on the fence between rock and pop punk. It is a thrilling track to begin Novella with, however it comes with a slight twist. Typically with a rock song it is expected that the singer will have attacking/rough vocals, but Simon Jackman presents much softer vocals which although unexpected, really works! This adds a dimension of uniqueness to the first track and keeps the listener guessing, automatically making you want to hear more…

The second track: ‘Easier’ carries on a similar sound from its predecessor but with much bolder vocals, giving it more of an edge. Again, this is quite a confusing track, but in a good way! The beat is amazing and you can barely resist dancing, it is the kind of song that was made to be performed. However, when you listen carefully, the lyrics are actually quite deep which almost makes you feel guilty for wanting to dance? Regardless, this song is an absolute banger!

‘Friends’ leads you in to a false sense of security with its slightly softer introduction before erupting in to a storm of heavy rock guitar. With the repetition of lyric “I don’t need another friend”, this song comes with slightly negative connotations but may be an experience that listeners can relate to. As a band, Veridian aim to create music that brings their listeners together and create a sense of community in which no one is left to face the world alone, it could be argued that this track is a perfect example of such music.

Novella concludes with ‘Curtains’ and ‘Pavement’ both released prior to the EP as singles. ‘Curtains’ perfectly showcases Jackman’s capabilities as a vocalist and carries on the high energy that the listeners have experienced so far, yet another unforgettable rock anthem!

‘Pavements’ received great coverage prior to Novella and was even featured on Spotify’s New Core playlist, giving it 10,000 streams in the first six days of its release! This track is much more subdued than the rest of the EP, giving the heartfelt vocals even more prominence. This graceful ending to the EP makes for ideal ‘dramatically looking out of the car window’ material, and is definitely not one to miss!

With a UK tour on the horizon in January, Veridian are getting ready to show off their epic talent and give Novella the performances it so rightly deserves!
