Dire Straits legend John Illsley has helped raise more than £10,000 at a rock gig welcoming back a quadruple amputee from a remarkable mountain climb.
Mr Illsley headlined a special ‘live lounge’ event on Monday, November 11, at Kimbridge Barn near Romsey for the Alex Lewis Trust.
The concert was put on to welcome back Mr Lewis - a Stockbridge man who lost all his limbs in 2013 to toxic shock – from an incredible journey.
Despite losing his limbs and lips, Alex climbed Ethiopia’s tallest mountain Ras Dashen, which is nearly 15,000ft high.
He used a specially-engineered solar-powered battery-assisted hand-cycle designed by students at the University of Southampton.
John Illsley, legendary bassist of rock band Dire Straits, headlined the welcome home concert after earlier sets from local talent Jake Gauntlett, Lucas & King, and Darren Black.
More than £10,000 was raised on the night for The Alex Lewis Trust, and it’s hoped the figure may eventually reach £15,000.
It was sponsored by rural insurers NFU Mutual, and James Prewett from the Mutual’s Winchester agency was auctioneer on the night.
Organiser Liz Trevor, from the Friends of the Alex Lewis Trust, said: “Our aim is to help raise the profile of the Alex Lewis Trust so that Alex may continue his work in helping others facing life’s challenges.
“We have been overwhelmed with the generosity and support that we have received from local businesses, colleagues, friends and families to help make these events such a success.”
Auctioneer James Prewett from NFU Mutual Winchester, said: “We were so pleased to be sponsoring the Alex Lewis Trust.
“The live lounge with John Illsley from Dire Straits was unbelievable. It takes so much effort to make these nights happen, so thank you to the Friends of the Alex Lewis Trust.”
