Live Review: Gender Roles, Grandma’s House & Sun spot at Rough Trade, Bristol

On Saturday evening the Brighton based noisemakers ‘Gender Roles’ came to Bristol’s Rough Trade bringing a stellar line up to the venue.

On tour to promote their latest album ‘Prang’ the trio played two nights at Rough Trade stores in Bristol and Nottingham, respectively selling out the Bristol show only a day before they took to the stage.

Supporting them at the Bristol show were the local ‘surf punk’ 3 piece ‘Grandmas House’ who played an exceptional show. Channelling the same riotous attitude that Gender roles provide, they gave the crowd a taste of what was to come in the most magnificent way.

Secondly local Bristol based indie up and comers ‘Sun spot’ played a hard bargain to be the more renowned support of the evening playing their hit track ‘Sunlight’ and almost stealing the show for the local crowd.

Gender Roles then came on after a huge hype built up from their perfectly selected support acts and immediately dove straight into Prang. Playing song after song from the new album with the crowd loving every moment of it and them getting a full 5 songs deep before finally addressing the fact that they had only played the new release and should probably mix it up a bit.

From here we heard classics such as Plastic, Gills, About Her and Skin. But regardless of playing their better known tracks they weren’t afraid to adhere to the fact that this tour was fully to promote Prang, and so they went on to play 9/10 of the songs on the album. And without a beat missed by the audience, it proved that this band undoubtedly have a lot more to come.
