Album Review: Tiny Moving Parts – Breathe

Minnesota’s Tiny Moving Parts are back this month with Breathe, their 7th studio album since their first release all the way back in 2008, and it’s safe to say they’ve come a long way since then.

Written between the tours of their last album “Swell” released in January 2018, Breathe emphasises the very rational fear lead singer and guitarist Dylan Mattheisen has of death and the subject of his own mortality. The album itself is a progressive move forward for the band. Although they’re still driven by the mix of Math rock/pop punk and emo influence we’ve come to appreciate from Tiny Moving Parts, these new tracks come with a lot more depth and confidence than we’ve ever seen from the band in the past. The tracks “Medicine” and “Icicles (Morning Glow)” which emphasise on struggles with mental health and overcoming loss through friendship are interspersed with new electronic flourishes. Likewise “Vertebrae”, which is the bands first ever acoustic track, also features a surprising banjo solo.

The album was recorded with their long-time collaborator and producer Greg Lindholm who oversaw seven of the tracks, and with John Fields for three tracks. Fields has production credits from Miley Cyrus to All Time Low to Jimmy Eat World and everything inbetween so his presence on the album is a huge step up for the band. On top of the new producer, the band have also recently signed to Hopeless records prior to this release.

The message that Tiny Moving Parts are putting forward with this new release is quite straight forward. -We shouldn’t let our fears or anxieties control us, and that being open and honest about these things is essential to helping us power on and move forward through the darkest times.

From a personal point of view Tiny Moving Parts have always been a form of moral and mental support for me since the day I discovered them. Their way of addressing the darkest thoughts in our heads whilst simultaneously making us want to shout every word and jump up and down with each distinctive guitar riff Dylan produces makes for a unique and exciting experience from a band that come from a genre that often gets accused of sounding similar across the board. This album further solidifies my feelings toward the music Mattheisen and co’ produce with it easily being one of, if not their best release to date. I can’t wait to be down the front of their UK shows in two weeks singing the words to these songs right back at the band and hopefully making new friends and having a great experience in the process.

The latest single from Breathe titled “Bloody Nose” has been released with a new music video ahead of the album release this Friday, September 13th.
