A Baest By Any Other Name.
Having already reviewed the new Fleshgod Apocalypse album, Veleno, I am now faced with a second shot of poison from our Danish friends Baest, who have enlightened the public psyche as ones to watch having availed recent tours with Abbath and Decapitation.
With an immediate start, no intros here folks, we ‘look into the abyss’ as the band promise to’ drink your soul like wine’ , we thrash around to a ‘Vitriol Lament’ and the frenzy continues with ‘Gula’ and ‘Nihil’, which is Latin for ‘nothing’. There is something very Behemoth here and also touches of Cradle Of Filth and Fleshgod Apocalypse, not meaning to undermine or underestimate the endeavours of Baest, it is great to see how music influences your work and your outlook.
Growing dark, and darker still with thundering percussion and roarsome vocals, this is an intriguing and well-constructed piece of work that demands to be heard.
A reference to Greek mythology as we row along the river ‘Styx’ accompanied by this mellow and quite graceful instrumental, a break in the battle if you will, and then saddle up my friends as we indulge in a little ‘Heresy’ and we find our destinies revealed in ‘As Above So Below’ still chasing our tails ‘in vicious circles’ and achieving nothing.
We lament the circumstance of an ‘Empty Throne’ but be sure your cup runnenth over folks, as Baest have progressed from baby steps and are striding around, loud and proud, ready to shake your soul.
An extra special mention to our Midlands thrash heroes, Bolt Thrower, as a launch yourself at the wall cover of ‘No Guts No Glory’ finishes this quite heady and rabble-rousing record.
Get in line my friends, this is the shot that you need to greedily down in one.
