Vevo announces the release of Whitney’s live performances of “Valleys (My Love)” and “Friend of Mine.” Formed from the ashes of Chicago indie rock outfit Smith Westerns, the mellow, country-informed pop/rock of Whitney is built around the core songwriting duo of Julien Ehrlich and Max Kakacek. Led by Ehrlich’s soft falsetto, the group’s first single, “No Women,” appeared in January 2016, and two months later they started making waves at SXSW.
With a fluctuating lineup of supporting players, Whitney quickly followed their SXSW appearances with opening slots on tours for ME-HI, Wild Nothing and Unknown Mortal Orchestra (Ehrlich was a one-time drummer for UMO). They secured spots at Governors Ball, Bonnaroo, Pitchfork Music Festival and others, all before their debut album, Light Upon The Lake, arrived via Secretly Canadian that June. With the official lineup of Ehrlich, Kakacek, Malcolm Brown, Tracy Chouteau, Charles glanders, Josiah Marshall and Will Miller, the album appeared on Billboard’s rock, alternative and independent albums charts, reaching the Top Ten of the Vinyl Album sales chart.
In 2019, Whitney returned with their sophomore full-length album, Forever Turned Around, which featured “Valleys (My Love)”, and their new single “Friend of Mine.” “Valleys (My Love)” and “Friend of Mine” are now streaming on all platforms.
