Album Review: Crown The Empire – Sudden Sky

Hardcore outfit Crown The Empire return with their fourth record, three years after the release of their last effort. Their last album Retrograde was what some considered a high point in their career so far, therefore the pressure is on for them to deliver to the same heights as before. But with alleged inner band conflicts and co-lead singer Dave Escamilla departing the band back in 2017 it certainly isn’t the easiest task.

Things start off strong after the intro with 20/20. The bass line is the beating heart of the opening four minutes and is a very promising start to the album. It’s clear why what i am was released as a single, it showcases their somewhat softer sound in the best possible way. Some hardcore fans have criticised this change in direction, but this showcases the vocal range Andy has to offer.

Unfortunately it doesn’t quite sustain this momentum, there is some filler in the case of BLURRY (Out of Place) which feels a little underwhelming. Under The Skin also feels a little incidental and somewhat generic maybe because it’s sandwiched between two of the heavier and stronger tracks on the album.

MZRY accompanied by its synthy chorus and screaming vocals is a clear stand out mid way through and sequence takes it a step further with a breakdown at the end which will definitely please fans of old. As will closing track Sudden Sky which showcases them still keeping their vibes even as a four piece.

All in all it’s an album which will likely divide fans. It’s a mixed bag where the highs don’t quite reach the level of previous outputs. However there are still some really good moments and considering the troubles they’ve had in the last few years, that has to be commended.
