Alternative dream-pop duo PINERO|SERENE prepare for the release of Dark Matter, their debut EP set to drop on 12th July, sharing its second single, ‘Dead Flowers’ premiered by TMRW Magazine. Previous single ‘Take My Soul’ was released to acclaim, premiering on Clash Magazine, with the video for the track premiered by FGUK. PINERO|SERENE is German/Filipino bass player, Cheryl Pinero and UK vocalist, Neeq Serene. Pinero is also the bassist for all-female indie rock band Friedberg, whose acclaimed debut single ‘Boom’ has received support from the likes of Red Bull Music, KALTBLUT Magazine, BBC Radio 6 Music, FM4 and Eins Live. She has featured as a touring bassist for numerous acts including Queen Kwong, Salt Ashes, Tara Lee and KT Tunstall and is a previous member of The Go! Team.
Based in the artistic hub of London’s East End, PINERO|SERENE create dark, atmospheric soundscapes, through a unique and paralleled songwriting collaboration, that personifies emotional experience. Neeq moved to London from Berkshire to pursue a passion for photography and music. She dabbled in spoken word poetry, fascinated by the potency of words, and has since honed her skills to the development of abstract songwriting and production skills. Cheryl began playing bass at age thirteen, and toured around Germany and The Netherlands in her early twenties, eventually settling in London.
Drawing inspiration from trailblazers such as Portishead, Massive Attack, Radiohead, Warpaint, Smashing Pumpkins, Jeff Buckley, and Placebo, PINERO|SERENE’s hypnagogic soundscape offers a taste of transcendence – where human emotion meets with artistic exploration of the fundamental coexistence of darkness and light. Comparable to a synthesis of the Cocteau Twins’ dream-pop tendencies, with Nirvana’s grunge-infused bass lines, PINERO|SERENE captivate the imagination with their richly textured sonic arrangements.
With their sophomore single PINERO|SERENE showcase all that is beautiful, arcane and unsettling. Meticulously constructed cathedrals of guitar set against potently rhythmic lyrics, this is war poetry at its finest. With its bones on show and chest wide open, ‘Dead Flowers’ is an unrepentant emotional exorcism – poignant and defiant.
Speaking of the track PINERO|SERENE comment: “‘Dead Flowers’ is the last in the chain of a four-track EP, which takes you on a journey through personal evolution. It’s about facing the fear of letting go, to make space for a new dimension of existence and perception.”
