Album Review: Riskee & The Ridicule – Body Bag Your Scene

Grime Punk pioneers Riskee & The Ridicule return with the ridiculously catchy, incendiary and politically on point ‘Body Bag Your Scene’. BBYS kicks off with the anthemic ‘Accelerate’ a song that twists the cap off a one-use plastic bottle, glugs its fizzy contents before carefully placing it in the recycling bin of hope. The lyrics are spat out with intent so tangible that at times it feels like you’re face to face with the band, in a phone box. The Eminem-esque delivered verses are backed by a Papa Roach ‘Last Resort’ tub-thump and its an intoxicating cocktail. Next up is the explosive ‘Kaboom!’ which is destined to a Festival second stage favourite, beer will fly when the chorus kicks in while ‘Our Time’ should seamlessly slip into the 6Music playlist.

The richly dark ‘Body Bag Your Scene’ rises like a clown out of a manhole before the cut speeds into the nineties with glorious Rock abandon. A cantering ‘Black White And Grey’ jabs Wonk Unit ribs while ‘In The Dark We Dwell’ has a codependent Romeo & Juliet theme kicking back at cash converters. ‘Sell Out’, ‘Millwall Brick Meets Glasgow Kiss’ and ‘Sex’ continue the journey around the pavements of Britain as the band lob lyrical milkshakes at the right wing, sexism and regeneration terrorists. The final track ‘Cut Your Teeth’ thrashes like a rat in a mousetrap, almost escaping it’s musical confines before it finally chews off its own tail. There are real emotions, intelligent wordplay and a donkey kicking soundtrack holding it all together, this an album that 2019 desperately needs. It’s time to embrace, nurture and release Riskee & The Ridicule’s dirty needle sound into the Britain’s vanilla pumping mainstream heavy veins.
