Album Review: Dervish – The Great Irish Songbook

Dervish,”The Great Irish Songbook” (Rounder)- Sligo based traditional outfit Dervish make their Rounder Records debut with a fascinating collection which explores  some of the most enduringly popular pieces in the Irish folk repertoire. The veteran performers bring all their usual passion and instrumental virtuosity to bear on cherished ditties such as “Down By The Sally Gardens,” “The Parting Glass ” and Patrick Kavanagh’s poignant “On Raglan Road,” aided and abetted by an eclectic assortment of guest vocalists including actor Brendan Gleeson,  maverick country rocker Steve Earle and the” Barnsley Nightingale”, Kate Rusby.Nashville bluegrass band The SteelDrivers also deserve a mention in dispatches for their rousing rendition of the much recorded “There’s Whiskey in the Jar.”
