Joining the already-stellar line-up of artists announced for Trinity 4, former The Enid frontman Joe Payne has been confirmed as a recent addition to this year’s charity prog festival, which takes place on 11th May 2019 at Leamington Assembly.
Voted Best Male Vocalist two years running in the Prog Magazine Readers’ Poll, the classically trained vocalist – who has a background in theatre, pop and rock music – gained popularity in the prog rock world after joining british progressive act The Enid in 2011. His appearance at this year’s Trinity 4 (replacing contemporary classical chamber prog duo Birks & Kroon) will see him performing a one-man acoustic set under his current solo alias, That Joe Payne. Under this name, Payne released his EP ‘What Is The World Coming To’ on 26th October 2018.
Commenting on his upcoming appearance at the festival, Payne states:
“I can’t wait to bring my one-man show to Trinity 4. This year, I’m really dedicated to expanding the possibilities of what I can do live. This performance will be reminiscent of my recent slot at the 2019 Marillion Weekend which seemed to go down a storm!”
Trinity Festival is an all-day event that has been running since 2014, with each year boasting six bands on the bill, a now-famous charity raffle and auction led by Jerry Ewing (editor of Prog magazine) and an all-out After Show party. Despite the festivities, however, Trinity 4 maintains the festival’s history of charitable donations, with this year seeing proceeds go towards Scope (a charity dedicated to assisting those with Cerebral Palsy) Help Musicians UK and Mind – both dedicated to mental health awareness and treatment.
For Payne, these last two charities are particularly poignant, as his departure from The Enid in 2016 came at the hands of the artist suffering from both depression and anxiety. Not one to focus on the negatives, however, Payne is thrilled to have been invited to “do his part” to support Trinity 4 and its chosen charities:
“It’s so great to be part of something that is supporting charities like Help Musicians UK and Mind”, says Payne. “Everything I am writing now has a mental health theme, and coming from my own experience of mental illness, I’ll do everything I can for the cause. It’s not an easy thing to go through or live with, but I find so much meaning in turning my own negative experience into something positive that can help others.”
