Boomtown, one of the UKs biggest independent festivals is an event of many parts and has been releasing each of their 12 district announcements since mid February covering everything from folk, hip hop, neo soul, drum and bass, hardcore, jungle, reagge, soca and a whole lot more, with over 500 different acts now confirmed for the 2019 instalment. Saving the mighty Town Centre until last, the district that puts live music at the forefront with a genre defying bill that uniquely sees the likes of Salt-n-Pepa right next to Prophets of Rage and Atari Teenage Riot.
Taking place in Winchester, between 7th-11th August the five day, 66,000 capacity event celebrates a multitude of music genres and has headliners that includes the likes of Lauryn Hill, The Streets, Chronixx, UB40 ft Ali Campbell & Astro and Groove Armada on the bill. Town Centre, which is one of the original main stages delivers sounds that span from rock to ska, punk to funk, reggae with blues, hip hop and jazz and folk and doesn’t disappoint.
Performing on this central hub that represents Boomtown’s love of eclectic music, includes American rock-rap supergroup Prophets of Rage who combine members from Rage Against the Machine, Cypress Hill and Public Enemy, Salt-N-Pepa the barrier smashing all-female hip-hop and rap crew with their epic live show, unapologetic punk from Slaves and the very welcome return of the gypsy punk veterans the riotous Gogol Bordello for their third appearance at Boomtown. The enigmatic and high energy Ozomatli Ft. Chali 2na from Jurassic 5 will appear along with dub, dancehall and ragga of Asian Dub Foundation, Canadian reggae influenced Bedouin Soundclash, Northern Irish alt-rockers Therapy? and digital hardcore, anti-fascist punks Atari Teenage Riot and folk singer / songwriter Beans on Toast makes a welcome return to the fair..
New for this year will be the Twisted Time Machine takeover of the historic Bad Apple Bar, alongside the multiple options of real ales and ciders will be the backdrop of 70s / 80s / 90s tunes all day and night each day of the festival… This new party central will be hosting non-stop bangers, making party dreams come true with 70s soul train, Jane Fonda style 80s aerobics dance-a-thons, key changes galore with 90s pop bands classics and the occasional rave like it was back in 1991… Watch out for some very special guests taking to the decks to guide everyone through the decades of dance.
Longstanding Boomtown institution, the Job Centre will again be opening its doors to proactive citizens with their notorious Office Christmas Party alongside Boomtown bassline spinning regulars including; Off Me Nut takeover and the ever skilled SHOSH from 24hr Garage Girls. The ministers of mischief, Boomtown Bobbies will be doing their best to keep people on the straight and narrow whilst delivering a line up that includes a secret headliner, explosive DJ Sterling Moss, Rukus, Born on Road Takeover, Seizmic Audio to Gypsy Disco.
“Chapter 10 saw the close of a ten year story and Chapter 11: A Radical City, is the start of a radical new world and it has given us the chance to totally mix things up! Over the last six weeks we’ve released a mammoth series of district line ups. They are unique in every way and are full of amazing acts from every scene imaginable and showcase over 500 artists from international stars to fresh grassroots talent. We are as immersive and creative as ever and this year the districts have provided us with an overarching, intricate and wider Boomtown stage that has given hundreds of actors and characters the perfect platform to launch our new storyline and bring it kicking and screaming to life!” Boomtown Organisers
