Tom Williams releases new single ‘It’s Dark Now’

Premiered yesterday on 6Music by Steve Lamacq, ‘It’s Dark Now’ is the blistering new single from Tom Williams. The follow-up to majestic recent single  ‘Early Morning Rain’, which was B-listed at 6Music and playlisted at Radio X, ‘It’s Dark Now’ comes across like Williams’ game attempt to rewrite ‘Street Fighting Man’ – from the mean streets of Hastings.

“It’s got an immediacy that some of the other songs don’t have,” he says of the track. “It harks back to my first album, ‘What’s The Story’, bought on cassette, aged eight. And it’s got a bit of The Who, it’s straight down the line, and it was written in about 30 seconds.”

Both singles are taken from Williams’ new album ‘What Did You Want To Be?’, which will be released March 29, 2019 on Wire Boat Recordings and is available to pre-order. The album was produced by Tim Rice-Oxley (Keane) and recorded at his home studio in East Sussex. ‘What Did You Want To Be’ is the follow up to career high ‘All Change’, which placed No.9 on 6Music’s Albums Of The Year in 2017.

Tom Williams is a songwriter’s songwriter. It’s a craft over which he obsesses, and the love of which he passes on with wide-eyed passion to the primary and secondary school pupils to whom he teaches music. His expertise with the form has seen him build up a passionate fanbase over the ten years in which he’s released albums, first as Tom Williams & The Boat, then under his own name.

Sparkling and insightful, inspiring and comforting, warm and tender, rocking and rolling and soothing, ‘What Did You Want To Be?’ is exactly the album Tom Williams wanted to make. One week, one studio, a brilliant producer, his five-piece live band – Jack Clayton (drums), Jake Mehew (keys), Igor Dall’Avanzi (bass), Ant Vicary (guitar) – and 11 pitch-perfect songs.

Tom recently launched the Tom Williams Podcast, the first two episodes in this regular series are available to listen to with more to follow. Says Tom, “I wanted to expand on the amazing cast of inspirational people who helped in the making of the new album, plus interviews and sessions with fantastic songwriters new and established.”

Williams recently completed the first leg of an extensive UK headline tour. The second leg begins on April 6 at Cardiff Clwb Ifor Bach and culminates at London’s Scala on May 16.
