Album Review: Jaret & Kelly – Sittin’ in a Tree

Bowling For Soup’s Jaret Reddick has teamed up with his BFF and Dollyrots vocalist Kelly Ogden to record the organically eclectic duet album ‘Sittin In A Tree’. Opener ‘Here We Go’ has a distinct head swirlingly hook-laden sound that lands somewhere between The Offspring, Ginger Wildheart’s Hey! Hello! and Toni Basil’s ‘Mickey’. Second track ‘Doin’ Alright’ is a poker playin’ saloon toe-tapper as the dual vocals and country twang form a seamless marriage of heartache and tongue in cheek hidden desperation. The jabbing guitar on ‘Something I’m Not’ is a BFS single with some added Kelly spice ‘N’ sass while ‘Make Her Miserable’ is a super strength sour gobstopper ditty of dirty candyfloss Pop. The balladesque ‘Butterflies’ flutters over cliche town before ‘Kids Again’ drunkenly scrambles around the trailer park in a jealous hissy fit of teenage tantrums. ‘Rocket Ride’ pinballs between eighties rap, Happy Days and Punky-pop while Both ‘Yourself Again’ and ‘How Did We Get Here’ rock ‘n’ roll with Jaret and Kelly’s main band catchy gusto. Sandwiched between these two corkers is the surprisingly emotive ‘Let’s Just See How It Goes’ which will remove moisture from the stoniest of eyes, it’s a beautifully romantic slip of a tune. ‘Daddy’s Girl’ strums the heartstrings before ‘You Win’ cheerleads weekends that pass in a fog of denial and short-sighted whiskey soaked goals. Final cut ‘Even If It Kills You’ perfectly encapsulates ‘Sittin’ In A Tree’ and both Kelly & Jaret’s on point, twisted post-MTV fizzy Punk psyche.
