Album Review: Afterlife – Breaking Point

Beyond Breaking

Is there life once you reach your breaking point?  Afterlife venture into this life with an offering to sate those who feel hollow, those who are looking to fill a void that has been left by some dose of misery that has been administered. From one weighty question to another in

“What do you know about sacrifice?”  Maybe we will be a little closer to knowing the answers by the end of this record. I’m reminded at times of Pantera, hard as nails, a rigorous and rage filled outlook that mirrors the world we are in.

The aptly named “Throat” sees us in a chokehold, not too far from murderous intent, but it is strangely cuddly with a beautiful chorus.

The rap metal fusion on “PSA” pierces your skull to take a peek inside. With the forensically charged cover image we take an immense amount of joy in “Giving Back The Pain”.

“Keep the pain you gave me and say goodbye”.

Having reached our “Breaking Point” we get a chance to evaluate what it all means,

“The damage is done, I don’t fear the end” as we try to resurrect ourselves after being thrown off an emotional cliff.

With “everything to gain and nothing to lose” we continue “Holding On” to whatever ails us, reluctant to let go even though we see the decrepitude before us. Forever under a “Grey Sky” it’s difficult to move forward and progress in life with so many hindrances.

A stark warning in “Karma’s coming for ya” for those who think they cannot be held accountable for their misdeeds. I only wish it came around much quicker sometimes, it would make it easier to believe if people had their comeuppance as quick as they dish out their wickedness.

The quite punchy and quite crunchy “New Rage” maintains the tempo and crushes everything in sight as we are reminded at how disastrous our lives have become.

The final song is “Broken Home” and it is my favourite.

“Can’t help but feel I broke this home”

Terrifyingly simple and chillingly honest.

We all have our limits, our breaking points- the straw and the camel come to mind.
