Winter Chills
Its Christmas my friends and after drinking the turkey and stuffing the beer (I think that’s how it goes…) I settle down at the fireside and unwrap the Christmas gift from my boss. Cane Hill, having recently completed a tour over here, are now waiting patiently for the release of this very chilled little number. I hit the play button and I am transported to the world of P.O.D, Il Nino, and Alice In Chains.
“86d – No Escort” begins this road trip, soft, smooth, quite gentle, leading nicely into the second track and let me tell you, there is nothing “empty” about these songs. A definite change in tempo from my usual, but most welcome, nonetheless.
“Don’t try to save me, wait for me to save myself” is clever writing and creates striking imagery that complements this soulful tune. This is proof that blood and gore, although quite entertaining, are not always necessary. If truth be told I was expecting something to burst forth from the speakers, but I find myself relaxing and unwinding and just enjoying what Cane Hill have accomplished here.
The title track “Kill The Sun” has the fantastic words “the last of me I keep in jars” and it made me think of that grisly killer who was known as “The Jars Murderer”, it’s a true story. Maybe nothing to do with the song but that’s the image that popped into my brain.
Quite mellow, cooling and refreshing on the palate, savour each note, each lyric and lose yourself, at least for a little while.
This is quite deep, moody even, and a little left of centre but still a great listen.
“Acid Rain” and “Smoking Man” finish this EP, stylish and effective. We hope to “filter out all the lies” – only if life was that easy.
It really is the most wonderful time of the year bathing in this glorious winter sunshine.
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you all.
Cane Hill – Kill The Sun released on 18th January 2019 on Rise Records.
