Live Review: Therapy? at The Asylum, Birmingham

Therapy?

Need Therapy? Get Behind Me, Creatures!

We are, by our very nature, creatures of habit. We have our likes/dislikes, comforts/discomforts, so when I heard King Creature were from Cornwall, I pictured a scrummy afternoon tea, with jam and scones and cream. I didn’t get any; but what I did get was another lesson in music from an unfamiliar band and I took an almighty hammering tonight. Nods and winks to Running Wild, Scorpions and the titans Judas Priest, there was fantastic musicianship here and some astounding fretwork. They came with a plan; working the crowd to the tune of Lizzy-esque guitars and it was an invitation to get on down and party, me hearty’s! Opening with the “Wrath” I really was up for this one, although my favourite was “The Fortune Teller” with its soaring riff, the crowd joining in with the “woahs” and “yeahs” made for a thoroughly enjoyable set. There was enough meat and potatoes to feed this hungry horde a hundred times over, we would leave with our belly’s full tonight.

After a hard week at work, I needed this
I think everyone at the Asylum tonight did.

Tonight’s Therapy? session kicks off with “Wreck It Like Beckett” and there is no stopping these guys. I kinda knew what to expect and was jumping around like a mad thing, and then they played what I came to hear “Lonely Cryin ’Only”- at this point I lost the plot completely, so I apologise if this review sounds a bit mental.

Andy Cairns has the most expressive features throughout; just top- notch entertainment; all smiles and googly eyes and chat up lines (like “fuck Trump”). The band exude an enthusiasm, and energy and an electricity that descends on you like a ton of bricks, they enjoy every second onstage, constantly thanking us for coming to see them tonight. It was a fantastic mix of the old and new with “Opal Mantra”, “Die Laughing” “Callow” and “Expelled”.
Were we “breaking the law” tonight? I don’t think any of us cared with the ode to James Joyce bringing the house down. A birthday greeting to drummer Neil continued into the encore and my gig buddy was thrilled to see “be evil” Michael as the “happiest bassist he had ever seen”. Maybe they let him loose at the all you can eat buffet earlier on!

“Stop It You’re Killing Me” is a clear indication of how little progress has been made over time. Where is the land of the free?

The obligatory middle finger to those in power was met with a passion, and a vigour that emboldened the public spirit into knowing right from wrong. By order of the Peaky “fucking” Blinders we had “Screamager” (little known fact, Tommy Shelby is on my payroll, hehehehe……).
This was the last night of the UK tour, but it had all the power and awesomeness of an angry Komodo. We were the lucky ones; I can hold my head high and say, “I was there” and my partner in crime will live forever with memories of “the happiest bassist ever”.

King Creature/ Therapy? at the Asylum, Birmingham on 23rd November.
