EP Review: Crashing Cairo – At Speeds That Destroy

Music and heartbreak often walk hand in hand as real-life birth, death and marriage all intersect ideas, dreams and plans. The desire to push past the past and walk towards the light is none more evident in Crashing Cairo’s ‘At Speeds That Destroy’ E.P. Some three years since the tragic death of their original drummer and the ten years since original keyboardist also sadly passed away Crashing Cairo return with a well crafted, punchy, atmospheric and cathartic E.P. Opener ‘Satellite’ has “hit” written across it in black indelible marker. The song tantalisingly rises as the chorus nails your hands to CC’s cross, it’s a light, subtle and devastatingly pure track. Next up is ‘Runaway’ which fizzes like newly shaken Ian Brown can of Pop. ‘It’s Not Like Life’ is guaranteed to get festival hands in the air, heads swaying and hipsters claiming they were there at the start. ‘Silent Heart’ has a faintly nostalgic feel which lazily swirls around the ears before entering the skull before the last cut ‘Sue, Your Eyes’ rumbles between genres like a pinball as it narrowly avoids tilting the E.P.

Crashing Cairo’s history adds a more melancholic slant but in no way is this a “woe is me” E.P if anything its a concise celebration of life and one of the freshest sounding releases of 2018.
