EP Review: Devilin Me – Self Titled

Jesus Hooligan side project Devilin Me crackling with a dirty honesty that requires scrubbing with a wire brush to get the real-life stink off the skin. Opener ‘Devilin Me’ is a punch to the lungs from Bill Sikes while bullseye eats your lunch from unconscious hands. It’s Peaky Blinders poetry dredged from the bottom of the cut. ‘Ain’t Got Time For This’ resonates like Sleaford Mods going toe to toe with Ian Dury set against tribal a new age traveller drumming beat. The wake-up and smell the incense of ‘Righteous Stick’ tears the bandage off religious scars to expose the weeping infected belief system and the confrontational lyrics poke faith in the chest before laying the nut on its quivering forehead. ’Linns Song’ has the homemade power to summon up the darkest of lords from the deepest of pits of despair with its unnerving bark and bite. Final track ‘I Smell Me In You’ is a heartfelt acapella ye olde love song of breathtaking verve and honesty. A soundtrack of life, death, love and foggy mud-strewn streets.

The physical CD is £2.50 +p&p and is available from bruntonsteve@yahoo.co.uk
