Album Review: Our Untold Story – My Dream My Rules

Our Untold Story’s latest release is the retro laced ‘My Dreams Rule’. The opening cut is a blue collar ‘Calm Seas Don’t Make Good Sailors’ which has a distinct Mellencamp flow albeit a loose ramshackle one. Next up is the woefully dated ‘Sexy Blonde’. The track sits somewhere between 70’s Rock and ‘Black Velvet’. The opening duo set the tone, tempo and tuning of the entire album. ‘Work’ has garage band demo feel, rather than a pressed suit this is a jacket slung over a chair of a song. ‘3am Boy’ shivers and shudders with Soul Asylum sensibilities before ‘No Regrets’ takes us back, back, back to the Seventies in a Franz Ferdinand driven Cadillac, with the top down.’Two Miles West’ has an addictive rising chorus, while ‘Mother Of Rock ‘N’ Roll’ is a stop-start diamond. ‘Strong Ones (our untold story)’ hop skips and jumps over genres fences before the side to side head mover of ‘Go For Broke’ completes this “everyone in the pool” release. Our Untold Story are the perfect late night, smoky bar band, however getting this earthy organic laconic sound across in the studio is a trick which they are yet to master. Enjoyable but not essential, would still go to see them live though.
