The latest MTV Rocks compilation CD has reopened the Pop-Punk door to a new generation as well nostalgically prodding the musical memory banks of anyone over the age of Thirty. Stourport’s (nr Brum) You Know The Drill have thrown their hat into the Blink/Green/Spring/Sum ring with their debut E.P ‘Selfhood’. Opener ‘Overcast’ has that steady radio Pop-Punk friendly formula of a flowing chorus, decent riff and a little bit of stop-start, slow it down and then bring it all back to the boil. Next up is the speedy road trip of ‘Homesick’ while ‘Suspect’ throws a festival blanket over every Pop-Punk click. The acoustic ‘Blossom’ could be slightly grittier rather than just another lost love song. It’s just too nice. Final cut ‘Snake Eyes’ is a massive forward step as the vocal stabilisers are removed and some much-needed rawness is added to the band’s well-crafted songwriting talent. Pop-Punk is a genre that refuses to drift off into the musical sunset, no matter how strong the current. You Know The Drill are a band with real potential they just need a little more edge.
