Surfing back into earshot with a seriously infectious second single Dame Jean are back to have the last laugh with: Joke’s On You.
The follow-up to their head swivelling debut track Wasted Love shows Dame Jean are no one-trick pony. Souped-up on gasoline powered guitar-lines and boasting a chorus customised to leave scorch marks across your skull, Joke’s On You, is another prime piece of garage-punk panache from the Bath-based outfit.
Here and then gone in less than 180 seconds, Joke’s On You is a fresh and devious new number from the band; a silver-tongued quip of a song that splits long before you can clock the punchline and will surely have you begging for a replay.
Filmed at their recent single launch show at The Bell venue in Bath, the video for Joke’s On You, finds the band dolled up to the nines and performing to a gaggle of glitter queens moshing with wild abandon at what appears to be one sordid soiree.
Talking about the new track and video, Dame Jean frontman Sammy Crocker says:
‘Joke’s on you is a frenzied surf ditty about the fearless confidence that comes after being broken and using that to drive you in spite of anything or anyone. It’s also an excuse to make a lot of very loud noises and scream about swamp monsters between sickly pop hooks.
‘We always have so much fun playing this live that it only made sense to capture that in our video. You can see our beautiful sweet queens all glammed up at one of our shows and the freaky celebrations that occurred afterwards.’
Having earned themselves a billing at this year’s Camden Rocks festival on the strength of their electric live performances alone, not to mention early media praise from Vive Le Rock who dubbed the band as “Jean genies!” for their magical first release and Dork Magazine who noted their irresistible skill for “uber-catchy guitar-pop that fizzes with attitude” – 2018 is already shaping up nicely for Dame Jean.
But it’s not just praise from festival promoters and the media the band seek. Hoping to create as genuine a community with their fans by engaging as personally and organically as possible, Dame Jean deliberately veto Facebook. Long before the recent scandals that have shamed the social media giant, Dame Jean have always believed a privately owned website should not hold such prominence in how we all engage with music today. So, find the band yourself, not on Facebook.
