EP Review: The Hyena Kill – Spun

Manchester duo The Hyena Kill release their latest E.P the bruising ‘Spun’. The E.P opens with the bands latest single ‘Exit Mask’. The atmospheric opening gives way to a mental breakdown in progress, of a chorus. The song suffers from roundabout choices, not sure with which exit to take as the track shifts gears in a frustrating left or right song. The same cannot be said of ‘Panic Womb’ which pounds the skull like a dysfunctional industrial steel press, it’s eighty-one seconds of violently beautiful noise. ‘Ribbons’ buddy’s up with a familiar albeit subtle rising sound that neither excites or bores while ‘Pound Of Flesh’ cascades in and out of genres with some larynx lacerating vocals. The eerie ‘Dare To Swim’ has a drifting on the ocean, sunburnt, stinging salty water breaking across red cracked lips to a blue kissed sky along with an agonising musical backbone. Final track ‘Cells’ bounces off prison cold brick walls, the skin tearing vocals and tight drumming bring all the straight jacket straps together. ‘Spun’ is tight and purposeful, some songs need a little shaping but its powerfully honest backbone pushes past the doubts.
