After only being a band since November, Black Anchors already played shows across the South West. Most notably with Ghouls in Plymouth, with Flatfoot 56 (from Chicago) at The Cavern, Exeter and with The Fallen State at a sold out show at The Underground in Plymouth. Along with those shows they’ve also played a local headline show in Bideford too.
At the start of January the band headed to Momentum Studios, Plymouth for 4 days to record their self titled debut EP which comes out on the 27th of April.
The first song from the EP Me, Tom Waits & an Empty Bottle of Rum is now streaming on Facebook and YouTube.
We managed to catch up with the band as they talked about their upcoming EP and more!
How pumped are you for your self titled EP?
We are really excited! It’s our first release as a band and we can’t wait for people to hear it.
Can you tell us something about the release no one else knows?
I wrote the lyrics to ‘Me, Tom Waits & An Empty Bottle Of Rum’ on a bus… That was rubbish… haha.
What is your is your favourite track from the EP?
James and Billy like ‘Me, Tom Waits…’ the most I think. For me, the opener ‘Favourite Records’ is my personal favourite. I love all four songs but that one is a highlight for me. I wrote it for a certain person during a really challenging time, so I have a really emotional attachment to that song.
How has the release of Me, Tom Waits & An Empty Bottle Of Rum gone down with fans?
It’s been great. We had such a positive response from people!
If you could work with any band or artist on a new song, who would it be and why?
Lana Del Rey, she’s amazing, that would be a dream duet. The Wallflowers did a track with Mick Jones from The Clash a few years ago. I’d love to write a song with him. I’m also a big fan of producer Ted Hutt, some of the records he’s produced are sick so I’d love to work with him one day.
How pumped are you for your tour with Pushing Daises?
We are playing three shows with those boys across the south west. We can’t wait, their new song ‘Picture Frame’ is rad!
What do you get up to in your spare time when not working on music?
James is always surfing! Billy takes a lot of videos of his dogs being cute. I’m pretty boring I think, just watching football at the pub with my mates.
What inspired you to get into music in the first place?
As a kid I’d blast International Superhits by Green Day, strum a tennis racket and sing into a lamp. The tennis racket didn’t make a nice sound though so I traded it for a guitar. From that day on I started writing songs, terrible songs but it was a start!
