Though less than four minutes in duration, Fierce is a multi-faceted and masterful slice of prog-tinged pop, crammed with tight time signature changes, complex vocal harmonies, cacophonous riffs and operatic vocals that nod to their heroes Queen, Radiohead, and Steely Dan.
Hailed as ‘fresh sounding, future-facing’ by BBC 6 Music’s Tom Robinson and praised by BBC Radio Scotland’s Vic Galloway for their “operatic, off-kilter, syncopated prog-pop”, KAZE have already firmly earmarked themselves as a band who demand your attention. With a winning penchant for the theatrical, both on record and the stage, the “Fierce” single is another fine example of the classically trained outfit’s enviable ability to marry erudite songwriting substance with a dramatical delivery.
Lyrically positioning the band shoulder to shoulder with anyone who has ever felt bullied, belittled or even identified with those harrowing words ‘#MeToo’, “Fierce” is a protest song that looks to put the sword to those in society who seek to demean and destruct.
Speaking about the track, Amy Webber of KAZE says:
‘Fierce is about finding your inner strength to finally stand up to people who intimidate and bully you. It’s about finding your power and your confidence to stand up to injustices.’
Featuring founding members Graham McCusker (keys, backing vocals) and Amy Webber (lead vocals), the track was recorded at Blueprint studios, Manchester, with the assistance of Thomas Fripp on guitar, Jamie Brewster on bass and Alexander Tod on drums. It was co-produced by Rodrigo Constanzo (with Graham) and further mixed by Adriano Buffone.
In honour of their new single, Graham McCusker and Amy Webber will be hitting the road for a short series of live appearances in April with appearances at Edinburgh, Glasgow and Manchester throughout April 2018.
