Lume Share ‘Keep Me Under’ Video

Chicago-by-way-of-Detroit trio, Lume, premiered their new track and accompanying video Keep Me Under with Revolver Magazine. The single is the first taken from their debut album Wrung Out – available for pre-order now ahead of it’s April 20th release on Equal Vision Records / Graphic Nature.

While the underlying meaning behind the video for Keep Me Under is finding beauty in the blandness of ordinary life, it chooses texture over narrative stylistically – leaving the viewer to interpret their own story. The track sets the tone for the record, finding the band attempting to get past being overrun by routine as a means to find happiness. Wrung Out is largely centered around a string of personal tragedies the band endured around the time they began work on the record. Wrung Out would become a memoriam to lost friends and a method of catharsis for the band as they went through the stages of grief.

Dan Butler (vocals/guitar) on Keep Me Under:

‘‘Keep Me Under’ was one of the first few songs we wrote for Wrung Out. Musically, we wanted to explore a more groove-based sound and not be afraid of leaving a little more empty space than we normally would. Lyrically, the song centers around the idea that being a pessimist does nothing but decrease your quality of life, yet sometimes we hold onto these negative feelings and outlooks because they feel good in the moment. I find myself doing that all the time, so this song in a way became a mantra to not do that.’

Dan Butler on signing to Equal Vision Records:

‘Working with Equal Vision was a somewhat unexpected move for us, but in a way seems super fitting. We grew up on EVR alumni bands like Bear vs Shark, This Day Forward, Circa Survive and Portugal. The Man, so taking the next step in our career with Equal Vision kind of brings things full-circle.’

In 2014, the members of Lume – Daniel Butler (Vocals/Guitar), Dylan Hulett (Bass), and Austin Hulett (Drums) – started the band with the purpose of emerging themselves in a diverse, vibrant musical scene that would help them reach a new level as a band. After several sold-out, limited run releases and a prolific touring schedule that found them hitting almost every state, the band entered the writing process for their upcoming full-length, Wrung Out, in late 2016 with the goal of recording what could become a pivotal release in their career. The band turned to Mike Watts (Glassjaw, Dilinger Escape Plan, O’Brother) to produce the record and help guide them as they expanded their sound. They also enlisted Johnny Dang (of o’Brother) and Spencer Ussery (of Big Jesus) to collaborate on several tracks; learning valuable lessons about crafting a song from both in the process. The result is a diverse collection of ethereal, heavy rock songs that owe as much to the bands they grew up on – such as Soundgarden and Radiohead – as they do to contemporary rock bands like Citizen, Chelsea Wolfe or Nothing. Wrung Out is undoubtedly Lume’s most ambitious record to date and having signed to Equal Vision Records / Graphic Nature, it will surely see them rise to new heights in 2018.
