Rebellion favourites DIRT BOX DISCO continue to defy the odds by releasing ultra catchy earworm friendly, straight up street level Punk-Pop ‘Immortal’. The chant inducing ‘Ready Or Not’ bounces out of the speakers like a dangerous dog on red bull then proceeds to bare its teeth at both parents and children alike. ’Teenage Lovestruck Blues’ has cheesy fries lyrics loaded with “wooaoo’s” and a full fat Pepsi riff of 80’s chart Rock. Next out of the Dirt Box sausage press is the slightly more reserved ‘You’re The Only One For Me’ which poodles around the head without really popping the scuzzy zit. ‘Caveman.com’ is a pure DBD.
The song deals with society’s reliance on computer, tablets, phones, social media et al, plus it has the lyric ‘“I wanna live like Barney Rubble’, genius. The cider chugging ’Stop Shouting’ is preceded by the mid paced ‘11th May’ which has an MTV circa 1992 backbone and some smokey Julian Cope vocals lobbed in for good measure. The rapid blasting ‘Mummy’s Boy’ removes ear wax with roadrunner dynamite while ‘Done & Dusted’ double parks on Ramones street with the hazards on. ‘Box Of Tapes’, ‘Mirror, Mirror’ and ‘Box Set Addict’ all continue the inglorious cocktail of genres that is Dirt Box Disco. The dementia dance of ‘Joyce’s Voices’ is a saddening topic with somewhat amusing lyrics. ‘Pint Kamikaze Jaeger Smash’ does what it says on the label whereas album closer ‘Shut The Fuckin Door’ slams the fire escape shut in the face of burning reality. If you’re already a convert to the Spoons church of DBD then ‘Immortal’ is definitely for you, if not, have a little taste, go on, what’s the worst that could happen?
Great album no doubt about it, these guys deserve more credit you can’t stand still at one there gigs or help joining in. Even Somerset would struggle to keep there arms folded
