If the fact The Fratellis are entering second decade isn’t enough to make you feel older than you actually feel then I don’t know what would. This album has a distinctly refreshing familiarly to it, surfing over the obvious comparisons with albums and songs past. You have to take The Fratellis at face value and let your musical guard down then you will really enjoy this, their fifth release. Opener ‘Stand Up Tragedy’ has a scissor sister backbone which snips away at the musical memory bank and leaves you thinking “I’ve heard this song before.” ‘Starcrossed Losers’ kicks off with a Costello bassline before drifting into a lazy summer, fruit cider anthem. Girls will dance, boys will stare, then longing looks will be fleetingly shared as the sun disappears and over sized sweatshirts are offered to shivering maidens. ‘Sugartown’ has Sixties Mersey Beat core which is dressed with modern flair and a two up two down chorus. The cantering Pop ditty ‘Told You So’ is followed by the “one two buckle my shoe” mid 2000’s clarion call ‘Next Time We Wed‘. Everything that’s good bad and indifferent about the decade that disappeared without a movement is wrapped up in this mix ‘n’ match tune. ‘I’ve Been Blind’, ‘Laughing Gas’ and the psychedelic spine mover ‘Advaita Shuffle’ all follow the toe tapping Fratellis party line. ‘I Guess I Suppose’ is a neck breaking nod to Primal Scream while ‘Indestrucitble’ struts with a Funky Brit-Rock swagger. Final track ‘I Am That’ is almost adult in its sound and texture when compared to the songs that have gone before it. The best has been saved for last. The Fratellis have delivered an all encompassing, enjoyable album of one foot in the past and one in the future musical flavour favourites.
