Interview: Wave Break

Wave Break, a newly-formed alternative rock/pop punk band from Boston, MA, is releasing their debut single Deadlock on Friday October 20th. At a later date, it will also feature on idobi Radio’s Undiscovered Sound. The song was recorded and produced at Kennedy Studios in Burlington, MA by Chris LaRocque and Steve Aliperta, who are both members of the Boston-based bands Pray for Sound and The Color and Sound. A debut EP is also in the works at this studio, which the band is aiming to release in early 2018.

The band is ramping things up after only a few short months, having only formed in April 2017. In addition to releasing their debut single, the band will also begin performing around the Boston area in November with plans to expand throughout the northeast as soon as they can. Check out their debut single Deadlock below!

We managed to catch up with the band as they talk about the latest track and more!

So how pumped are you for the release of Deadlock?

Kelly: I’m really excited, and a little nervous actually. Before this I was doing solo stuff for several years, so this is my first time releasing something in a band context. This is definitely the strongest release I’ve ever been a part of, but I’m just hoping people like it.

Mike: Definitely really excited. It’s our first release after all.

Alex: I am extremely pumped for the release of Deadlock! It’s the first original song that I wrote guitar parts for with an official band of great friends.

David: So pumped. We’ve been talking about this release for a while and think it’s potentially our strongest song.

Can you tell us something about the single no one knows about?

Kelly: The song was actually called “Gun or Knife” until a couple weeks ago, right before announcing the release. We changed it because we thought it was a bad time to release something by that name so soon after the shooting in Las Vegas. Calling it “Deadlock” is still very weird to me haha.

Mike: This is the first original that I jammed on with Kelly before the band was formed.

Alex: Deadlock is a politically charged song, check out our website for more info 🙂

David: We reworked the bass line 3 times.

What was your favourite moment while recording this?

Kelly: Probably recording the vocals. I did them in just under an hour which is probably a new record for me haha.

Mike: Hitting the cymbal bell.. Always so satisfying 🙂

Alex: My favorite moment of recording this song was being introduced to a production studio and using new guitars to track parts.

Will there be a follow up to this single this year?

Kelly: Possibly at the very tail end of the year, if not then definitely in January or February. The next song will have a music video, and it’s my favorite one that we’ve put together so far. We’ll be filming it pretty soon.

Alex: There will be a follow-up to Deadlock this year, keep an eye out for music video announcements!

Can you tell us anything about your upcoming EP?

Kelly: Every song lyrically revolves around some kind of metaphor, and most of those metaphors are very violent. It’s too soon to go into much detail haha.

Mike: Some of the songs were written by Kelly years ago, but the bands instrumental parts have all been put together in only the past 6 months. It was great that she had material from the start, it really helped us hit the ground running with original songs once the whole group was formed.

Alex: Our upcoming EP has a really unique blend of alt-rock, pop-punk, and post-hardcore instrumental influences, accompanied by our extremely talented female vocalist. We are always
writing really well and easily together while defining our sound.

David: It’s very similar to this single.. With a couple surprises.

If you could work with any band on a new song, who would it be and why?

Kelly: Either Jimmy Eat World or PVRIS. I think they’re my two favorite bands right now because neither of them have ever put out a bad song.

Mike: I think Citizen would be an awesome band to collaborate with. I’d love to hear the product of that chemistry.

Alex: If I could work with any band on a new song it would be The Story so Far. That band has amazing energy and a great vocalist who writes catchy tracks.

David: Local band Spiritual Rez has been catching my interest especially their more punk stuff.

How did you guys come with your name?

Kelly: We were kinda just throwing around words and phrases until we came up with something we all liked. “Wave Break” is a metaphor meaning to overcome adversity, which has a lot to do with our lyrical content.

Alex: We came up with our name by looking for a way to separate ourselves
from the crowd while also having the freedom to think about and write about anything.

What’s the live music scene like in Boston?

Kelly: It’s great, there’s a huge variety of music here and the punk scene is very much alive too.

Mike: Boston is a wonderful place for live music, having a large variety of venues and TONS of talented folks. The people are passionate and super supportive.

Alex: The live music scene in Boston is great! The venues are all really close together, have a
variety of sizes, and the crowds are always a good time.

David: The live music scene is good for local bands. The local musicians are the best.

Would you ever want to play Europe/ UK?

Kelly: I would LOVE to play Europe.

Mike: Hey, if opportunity calls, I’d go!

Alex: I would love to tour Europe / UK. Gotta hit up Amsterdam again, ahah.

David: Yes.

If you could play at any venue you in the world, where would it be?

Kelly: Not a venue, but I’d love to play a big festival/tour like Warped Tour or Skate and Surf in New Jersey, where I’m from. I’ll be happy if something like that happens.

Mike: Red Rocks Ampetheatre in Colorado. Hands down.

Alex: If I could play at any venue in the world, it would be the Red Rocks Amphitheatre.

David: Woodstock (Bethel Woods)

What was your first gig you all ever went to?

Kelly: The first gig we played was technically an open mic, and after that we played a house show. We play our first legitimate shows next month.

Mike: If open mics count, then Terry O’Reillys open mic in Newton was where we shook out our first jitters as a band. There’s no better place to do that in my opinion.
