EP Review: Pretty Little Enemy – Second Load

Somerset Rockers PRETTY LITTLE ENEMY aurally attack the ears with a blitz of chopping guitars, speed thumping drums and a persuasive female vocal style that helps to sand the jagged musical edges – By Guy Shankland. Opener ‘Get A Grip’ has graceful old meets, then physically beats, new Rock sound interspersed with the punch drunk heart “I swear I’m alright” lyric adding to the overall aggressive love failure backbone. ’Collide’ kicks off with a winning 90’s riff but then descends into a Rock and Metal Pick ‘N’ Mix with every style getting crammed into the disorientating but enjoyable 3.17 minutes. The standout of the four tracks is the power house ’Play By The Rules‘. The verses scold with a brutal deep burning fire which is anaesthetised by a gloriously catchy chorus that gives the song a perfect almost organic, soothing balance. Final track ’It’s All Just a Show’ lacks a little guidance, it has a distinct stop-start flow, like someone constantly hitting the brakes when they know you need the bathroom. That said it’s still a worthy addition and continues to highlight some A+ vocals. PLE have produced a high-quality E.P that avoids some of the worst modern Rock clichés but embraces and harnesses the appropriate ones, which is much harder than it sounds.
