Common People is set to take place this weekend (27 – 28 May) in Southampton Over the weekend there is a number of up and coming bands on show amongst the main acts, Pete Tong, Tom Odell, Sean Paul, Groove Armada and more. This year there is a stage called the Uncommon Stage where some of the most promising bands about have been announced. One to look out for is Black Honey who will be headlining the stage. The band is a four piece indie outfit from Brighton for whom right now, the hype is heavy and for once completed justified.
The Magic Gang are also headlining over the weekend having performed on main stage last year. Following two singles and tours with Wolf Alice and Swim Deep, The Magic Gang are set for domination in the world of rock, having spent the last few years building up a devoted fan base wherever they’ve played.
Also there over the weekend is Beans on Toast who is a man that has been around the block more times than he cares to remember. His wise drunken ramblings, drug ballads, honest love songs and no holds barred social commentary have made him a firm regular on the festival circuit.
Liphook/Liss band Blaenavon are also one to watch at the weekend having recently released album That’s Your Lot to their fans.
Other acts to watch is the likes of Fever who have been setting Southampton alight for a few years now with their filth drenched, hook laden indie rock. A mainstay of the local scene, 2017 promises to be Fever’s breakthrough year.
Natives, who have been touring alongside Busted this yearm are a band who have learned their trade the old way; through years of touring the UK toilet circuit in a transit van on its last legs, sleeping on floors and gradually building an extremely loyal fan base, slowly making the transition from playing to nobody but the sound man in the back rooms of dingy pubs to filling the UK’s best known venues with their own headline shows.
Other band include Kassassin Street on the main Common Stage, the band are a rare proposition in the current time when Soundcloud streams dictate the perception of a band’s success: They are a band who sell out their shows, their fans knowing that when they go to a Kassassin Street gig they’ll be transported for an hour of twisted, dance infused psychadelia. The Novatones will also be playing on the main stage The South band, who is beginning to be a regular at Isle of Wight Festival, are fuelled on a love/hate relationship for all things British. proud to be part of England and the legendary music scene that comes with it, but fed up of the spoon fed bullshit synonymous with the X Factor generation and all the pop puppets. Overall with the likes of The Dead Freights, The Costellos, Cassava and more on the Uncommon Stage, Common People Festival is set to have their strongest alternative scene yet.
