EP Review: My Only – This Room & You

My Only

Norfolk/Cambridge based emo punk quartet My Only revealed their debut EP This Room & You last Friday. They certainly came out with a bang, as their hard hitting vocals throughout this record, really is something to be proud of. The opening track A Little Less (Less) straight away just sets the scene for the EP. Automatically you just think of the likes of Boston Manor and Moose Blood which you do see similar elements about My Only however there is something different. The rough but powerful vocals from Jonathan Barnes, almost sounds something like from Trash Boat, and really gives you that emotional feel about the song. What’s even more different about the opening track is that the guitar riffs at the start from Benas Audinis is almost Pop Punk but soon changes to Emo. Next up is I Had to Pay Every Breath I Took, and this particular song hits hard straight away and Barnes really pulls off some powerful vocals until around a minute where he shows that he also has a softer side to his voice. Drummer Tom Ward, like he does throughout the EP, really shines through on this track as he compliments Sam Clerk on Bass with some great combinations.

The penultimate song on the four track EP really is shows the emotion behind the band, and clearly means a lot to them. Bass player Sam, recently commented it as ‘a reflection on situations that leave us feeling empty and often completely helpless.’

This can certainly be heard throughout the song, and some of the lyrics almost has a element of My Chemical Romance’s Gerard Way. Ward’s drumming really comes into its own with this song and fades out simply with Ward doing what he does best. The last song No World Without You is a fantastic way to  end a EP as it shows everything that you’ve heard before in the previous tracks however for me it almost has more of an impact. Barnes’ vocals start of slightly softer then your use to with him however with the song gradually picking up tempo, those hard hitting vocals certainly gets stronger as the song goes on. The track is another solid edition to the debut EP that may just mark the beginning of a long and successful career for My Only.

Rating: 9/10 My Only are a band to look out for, I have no doubt you’ll be hearing bigger and better things from these lads very soon.

Highlight: Saboteur, for me this is the highlight of EP because it shows a lot of emotion throughout the single, and is well worth a listen!
