THE CITY KIDS release their booming debut album.

THE CITY KIDS

‘THINGS THAT NEVER WERE’

(Cargo Records)

8/10

THE CITY KIDS debut ‘Things That Never Were’ shoves ‘n’ pulls with a sleaze infused Rock ‘N’ Roll indignation that snarls like a rat caught in a trap. Opener ‘The Best Of You’ comes heavily armed as the searing guitars and gruff vocals slip gears and gun down the bitter roses highway. (watch the video for ‘Best Of You’ here: https://www.facebook.com/thecitykids/videos/2476607475947364/)

‘Before You Fall’ laconically kicks the broken-hearted dog in the corner before guitarist JJ Watt’s former band The Main Grains live favourite ‘You Get Nothing’ finally gets a well-deserved recording. The missed beat returns with an emotive ‘She Loves You’ while ‘Left Behind’ grinds the post Grunge gears as the pace of the album motors comfortably in Rocks middle lane. A filthy slab of post-Motorhead attitude resonates throughout ‘Rats’ as this dirty needle of a track screeches around horror town. ‘No More Heroes’ is slurred out with a nineties riff slipping down the rehab wall while ‘All I Want’ benefits from some superb guitar work. The albums final two cuts are the semi-ballad ‘Words Of A Fool’ and meth mixed with red bull ‘Round And (A) Round’. This is a full-bloodied whiskey fuelled Rock ‘N’ Roll debut that is perfect for beating down those isolation blues.
